ONCE UPON A TIME
There was a pharaoh, strong and kind, but plagued by dangers to his people. As he struggled with an enemy force, the pharaoh's brother and trusted priest used the magic text the invaders sought to cast a dark spell, never telling the pharaoh how it cost the lives of 99 villagers. From their blood rose seven golden items of power, great enough to stop the invaders in their tracks. But a force of equal and terrible power took hold in the world along with them - Zorc, a dark will that manipulated the priest to create the items to begin with, and went on to urge him - along with a lone survivor of the massacre - to contract with him, and bring about the end of the world.
But Zorc, the priest, and surviving thief were denied by the pharaoh's heir, sealed together inside the items and locked away for three thousand years. What remained of priest's soul was trapped inside the item known as the "Puzzle" along with the young pharaoh and much of Zorc's power, but Zorc's own will clung to the item called the "Ring" instead. Through thousands of years he waited, biding his time until the pharaoh appeared again, unaware of his identity and using a young man as a vessel for his soul. Zorc took a vessel too, but his host was the echo of the thief who sacrificed himself to his vengeance, and Zorc embedded the remnants of the thief's will into his own identity, creating a "new" Zorc in the process.
Under this new persona, the demon attempted to quickly defeat the spirit of the pharaoh, but his mortal friends and Zorc's own host turned against him. Defeated for the moment, he rallied and rethought his plans, deciding to instead gather the items back together and regain his lost power, still locked away. It took a great deal of time, convincing the pharaoh's vessel into trusting him, and manipulating or murdering the other items' various hosts, but eventually he snapped the trap shut around the pharaoh, just as the dead king tapped into his lost memories.
Using a custom-built display of the old kingdom for a tabletop game and the power of the Puzzle, the spirit challenged the pharaoh to play against him, and "reenacted" the events that led to the pharaoh's death, all to bring about a second summoning of the true Zorc. His plan was successful this time, but once again the pharaoh's friends were Zorc's blind spot, and the pharaoh defeated him. He might well have resurfaced and tried again, but not long after his defeat, the seven golden items were destroyed, dropped down a cavern, and Zorc lost every connection he had left to his own world.
BUILT FROM THE ASHES
Lost, drifting where no worlds existed, Zorc endured purely on the strength of his will, refusing to let himself fade away entirely. It was a pitiful level of existence, but in that space he had nothing but time, and he spent it regathering himself, drawing on anything else unlucky enough to fall into the same nothing as him. He had nothing left to connect him back to his own world, but eventually he regained enough of himself to pull in what he had always drawn his power from - souls.
Reaching blindly out between worlds, his weak efforts would from time to time catch hold of a mortal's spirit, just as they died in their own worlds. His successes were few at first, but with each captured soul he regained a little more strength, and a little more power, and it wasn't long before he settled on a solution. If he could not make it back to his own world, he would create a new one, right where he was. Built by his own hand, he used his captured souls to help his little world endure, and housed the souls powering in it, keeping them from fading away. A self-supporting system, with him in the center. And if he had to break the souls' will down to broken pieces to do it - that was a price he could pay.
Once he had enough souls, enough time, and perhaps regathered the bits of his own will... Who knows what he might manage...
